North Carolina comes into this game ranked tenth in the nation, but opening up your season on the road in Blacksburg is going to be a tough challenge. This is why the latest NCAAF odds have the Tar Heels as a -5.5 point favorite against the spread and -220 on the money line. The over/under is listed at 63 total points right now.

The College Football betting public loves North Carolina as the road favorite and currently has 80% of their money behind them.

North Carolina Tar Heels:

North Carolina will have third-year quarterback Sam Howell get the start, who many people believe is one the  top quarterbacks in the nation. Last season at home against the Hokies, he led his team to a 56-45 victory.

In that matchup, he went 18 of 23 for 257 total yards and 3 touchdowns. The story of that game was the rushing attack for both teams, with Virginia Tech putting up 260 total yards, but North Carolina destroying their defensive line putting up 399 rushing yards.

Last season, UNC scored an average of 41 points per game, but on defense they gave up an average of 31.3 points per game. Sam Howell’s 68 touchdown passes are the most in ACC history for a player through two seasons, so it’s going to interesting to see what he can do in this one.

The Tar Heels are 1-4 straight up in their last 5 games played in week 1 and 2-6 against the spread in their last 8 games against Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech Hokies:

Virginia Tech will have Braxton Burmeister get the start and he’ll have his top receivers back from last season, Tayvion Robinson and Tre Turner, Jr.

The Hokies in 2020 put up an average of 31.1 points per game, but gave up 32.1 points per game on defense.

The Hokies are 12-3 straight up in their last 15 games played in September and the total has gone under in 10 of Virginia Tech’s last 14 games against North Carolina.

Everyone knows that Virginia Tech haven’t fared well against highly ranked teams in season openers. They’re 0-9 in openers vs. Top 10 opponents.
