Notre Dame Fighting Irish:
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish come into this game ranked ninth in the nation with former Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan earning the starting role. He’ll take over this Notre Dame offense that was 27th in the nation last season.
In 2019, Coan completed 69.6 percent of his passes for 2,727 total yards, 18 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions.
Running backs Chris Tyree and Kyren Williams will both return as well as tight end Michael Mayer. Mayer had 42 receptions for 450 yards last season and you should see him have a great performance in this one.
The Fighting Irish scored an average of 33.4 points per game last season, while have a top defense that only gave up an average of 19.7 points per game.
Notre Dame will have a new defensive coordinator, Coach Marcus Freeman which will have this defense be more aggressive and take chances. Freeman as the Cincinnati coach met the Florida State coach Norvell twice in 2019 and Norvell was able to get wins in both of those matchups.
The Fighting Irish are 4-1 against the spread in their last 5 games played in September and the total has gone under in 9 of Notre Dame’s last 13 games played in week 1.
Florida State Seminoles:
The Florida State Seminoles have the perfect opportunity to start this season off if they are able to take care of business at home against these Irish. They are coming off a terrible 2020 season and they still have a lot of question marks. Coach Norvell has yet to name his starting quarterback in this opener, but you’ll see both McKenzie Milton and Jordan Travis get snaps.
McKenzie Milton, the UCF transfer had that serious leg injury and it’s been a touch road to get him back to his full potential, but it’ll be a huge improvement for FSU if he’s at that stage now and ready to upset Notre Dame. Speaking of improvements, you see a big permanence out of running back Jashaun Corbin in this game. Last season, Notre Dame was able to shut down the run game completely, but it will be a different story this time around.
FSU only scored an average of 24 points per game last season, while having a bottom tier defense that gave up an average of 37.5 points per game.
Florida State is 2-6 against the spread in their last 8 games when playing as the underdog and the total has gone over in 5 of the Seminoles last 7 games played in week 1.
